Former Sheriff Attends Drug Treatment Program in Ohio for Addiction Recovery and Substance Abuse
It was a tragic day in Sandusky, Ohio, when the honorable County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer was asked to step down due to his battle against opioid addiction. Overmyer began taking opioids prescribed by his doctor at age 36 after being diagnosed with arthritis. By age 37, Overmyer’s coping mechanism in response to arthritis pain turned into a grueling addiction. The former sheriff expressed, “it was a daily thing, multiple, multiple pills a day. Probably 10 a day and it got out of control.”
In 2016, Overmyer was arrested, jailed, and sentenced to 4 years in prison for drug charges. Overmyer hopes that his story can help illustrate the fact that opioid addiction can happen to anyone. He wants to show others facing this disease that help is out there and that “you have to work on your character defects and recovery and do away with shame and guilt…”
Today, an estimated 23 million Americans are addicted to alcohol or drugs and need treatment. Unfortunately, only 1 in 10 of them will get the treatment they need. Several factors may prevent a person from getting the help they need to overcome addictions. Like many others, Overmyer expressed that his biggest obstacle throughout his recovery process was ridding himself of shame, speaking out about his addiction, and seeking the proper treatment.
Fortunately, Overmyer turned to Recovery Institute of Ohio, where he received the highest quality addiction treatment in a safe, supportive, and therapeutic environment, ultimately providing him with the tools he needed to regain his life and find his purpose. Overmyer now works as a drug counselor at the Recovery Institute of Ohio, where he helps others struggling with drug and alcohol addictions.
